#213: Honey Don’t

The Beatles almost always felt obligated to give Ringo one lead vocal per album, and since he only wrote two songs for himself during the band’s tenure, he was basically stuck with the leftovers–Lennon/McCartney dregs or mediocre country/western covers like this one. Nothing against the Carl Perkins composition itself, although there’s nothing exciting about the music or lyrics, but the entire band sleeps through this performance. When Ringo twice intones, “Rock on, George,” George twice proceeds to play a brief guitar riff that sounds straight out of a middle school recital. Also, the first time, Ringo requests, “Rock on, George, one time for me.” The second time, he says, “Rock on, George, for Ringo one time.” Was he so bored during the recording session that he forgot about the initial rocking on that took place just 65 seconds earlier?

“Wait…did I already ask George to rock on? Play it cool, Ringo. Play it cool.”
