#99: Tell Me What You See

I really want to make the case here that “Tell Me What You See” is a lost Beatles masterpiece that deserves more attention. I really want to, but I can’t. It’s a filler track. But it’s a personal favorite. (Well, a 99th favorite.) One of those songs that I rarely seek out, but any time it pops up on shuffle or I’m listening to Help! I smile and think, “Yeah, I like this one.”

It’s pretty charming right out of the gate, with calming percussion and meek, wistful lyrics. As much as I normally advocate for Lennon/McCartney harmonies, I really like the moments where Paul softly handles the vocals on his own–it’s a very simple but attractive melody. And as usual, even a track that was clearly tossed off quickly includes a cool, distinct element in the funky electric piano riff that follows each instance of the title being sung.

So basically…yeah, I like this one.

Anthony Cusumano is to “Tell Me What You See” as Sir Mix-a-Lot is to big butts. There ya go, kid, now go out there and pass your SATs.
